Competition = Fun

My favorite dates include an element of competition. I love a challenge, and even if there is no prize, or a prize that sucks, I always have fun, when there’s at least an ounce of contention. It’s a guy thing i know, I can’t help that I never got over my need to prove dominance through victory. Although I can’t deny, I think it’s sexy when a girl beats me at something. If your last date involved a trip to the grocery store maybe it’s time to shake things up a bit with a good old fashioned rumble. Here’s a few ideas for some good times going head-to-head.

Boards and Cards

Starting off with an old stand by, but a couple of solid two-person board games and a deck of cards are a must-have for any couple. The basics, would be Scrabble, checkers and Monopoly, for board games and War, Uno and Rummy for cards. But games that are usually reserves for parties like Scattegories, or charades are fun. Charades is great exercise in communication and humiliation, for a couple to share. With hundreds of 2 person card games from around the world, there are plenty of great ones, games which involve some speed, like spit, crazy 8′s or 3 card Monty. Or try learning a new game nether of you know and it can become your game. Of course, if you want to add the word “strip” in front of any of these you can take it to a whole new level.

Bar Games, Child’s play and sports

If there is a local dive bar any where near you odds are they have a pool table or a dart board you can occupy for the evening. There’s always the option to revert back to childhood and hit up an arcade it’s a good time getting a little too excited over a game of air hockey or Streetfighter. If you can stand the wayward looks form skeptical adolescents, see if there is a roller rink or a laser tag place near your town. Whether it’s professional sports, or even your local amateur leagues going to a game as a couple is fun, joining a co-ed intramural team is even better. Most places have a community center of some kind which may offer teams you can join together. If your into solo time, bowling, squash, tennis, racquetball or a game of “Horse” in the park is great exercise and bonding.

Betting and Contests

Whether you want to bet money, chores, “favors”, or bragging rights putting something on the line, can make for memories, or violence either way it’s a good night. The best part is that contests and and bets can be found everywhere. It can be as simple as sitting on the porch,betting on what color car you think will come or as juvenile as shooting spit balls at a target. The TV is full of great stuff to bet on, Reality TV provides a near nightly wager and awards shows like the Oscars and the Grammys offer print out ballots. Sporting events, even Presidential speeches, hell, you can bet on practically anything.

The point is, if you find things getting stale in your relationship, sometimes all you really need is a little healthy competition to heat things up. What are your favorite couple games?
