The Perfect Valentine’s Day Mix Tape

February 13th, 2009 by Flirty Felicia

Valentine’s day is fast approaching and you may be scrambling around trying to find the perfect gift for that special person in your life. Making a mix CD is a thoughtful (and cheap!) way to express how you feel about your loved one. However, you should keep a few things in mind while creating your mix.

Don’t Be Creepy

It’s important to keep in mind how long you have been with your significant other and how serious you are with this person. If you have just started dating then you should probably refrain from putting any super sappy songs on your mix. I once received a mix from someone I hadn’t been seeing very long. The CD was full of sappy emo songs. Not only was the CD was annoying (sorry to all you emo lovers) but it was also confusing and creepy. We had just started seeing each other and I wasn’t really sure how any of these songs applied to our relationship. After he gave me the CD he kept asking me what I thought, and what I thought was that we were not on the same page. Avoid trying to send direct messages via song lyrics and keep things flirtatious.

Keep the Other Person in Mind

The point of making a mix for someone is to be considerate, so the last thing you want to do is make the CD and put no thought into it. You should definitely keep in mind the other person’s taste in music, because no one wants to listen to a CD full of a genre of music they don’t enjoy.

Before you make your significant other a mix, make sure you know a few of their favorite songs, artists and bands. It’s not a bad idea to do a little a research, either. Find a rare copy of a song by an artist they love and they will probably think you’re not only really cool but also have great taste.

Don’t Be a Walking Cliche

Anyone can go online and search “top 10 love songs” and come up with a completely boring, cliche list of songs. Step away from the Journey and the Air Supply. It’s been done.

Have a Sense of Humor

Even if you are using your mix CD as a vehicle to profess your love it’s not a bad to break up the tension with a song thats funny. Be it a “Weird Al” Yankovic song (who doesn’t love Weird Al?) or a song that you and your love have an inside joke about, a funny song will keep the mood of your mix light and fun. I highly recommend “If You’re Into It” or “Business Time” by Flight of the Conchords.

Add a Little Art

Adding a cute picture of the two of you or a little original artwork will jazz up the CD cover and will make you seem even more adorable and considerate! If some of the songs on your CD have special meaning to you and your loved one, create an insert for your CD with the lyrics.

What songs would you include on a Valentine’s Mix?
