For Your Consideration: Worst Date Movies

March 3, 2009 | Date Ideas by Suzy in the City

I finally did it - met someone online!  He’s actually normal, my age, and really awesome.  We had a great date last night, and are taking it to the next level this weekend: the “staying in” date.  I’m cooking and we’re watching a movie, so we all know what that really means.  While rifling through my movie collection trying to decide what would be the perfect film for our evening, I stumbled across a few that would just be disastrous to watch on a date.  From crazy women to painfully awkward romances, I just had to laugh at how awkward it would be if I chose one of these movies.

Here are some of the worst date movies I found in my collection:

Fatal Attraction - The classic “crazy stalker woman” film.  Unless you want your date to start questioning your intentions when you ask him about his pet bunny, skip this one for something a little lighter.  And a little less crazy.

40 Days and 40 Nights - The premise of the movie is a young man abstains from sex through the entirety of Lent on a bet.  Unless you are celibate or don’t plan on getting some, why put yourself through the torture?  Though the sexual tension could be pretty hot…

Unfaithful - Married women meets hot, foreign guy and begins illicit affair.  While the love scenes between Diane Lane and Olivier Martinez are super hot, something tells me a movie that is centered around cheating probably isn’t the best idea for a date movie.

Date Movie - The movie is called Date Movie.  That is proof enough that you should not watch it on a date.

Blue Velvet - Very few people get the cinematic brilliance that is David Lynch, and a first/second/third date is certainly not the place to test out that fact (unless you are dating the most awesome person ever).  Between severed body parts, bizarre sexual encounters, and misogynistic undertones, the uninformed viewer might be turned off.  And that’s exactly what you don’t want your date movie to do.

Single White Female - Woman has psychotic woman become her new roommate, psychotic woman than proceeds to steal normal woman’s life and identity.  Nothing says romance like borderline personality disorder!

Revolutionary Road - While this film about a bored suburban couple has won critical acclaim, the desperation of their relationship and patheticness of their lives is a huge downer.  If you still have faith in marriage after watching this movie, I commend you.

Schindler’s List - One of the most moving, fantastic movies about the Holocaust ever made.  But take a cue from Seinfeld and pass over this one for date night.  Just a tad too intense.

What about you - did you find any others in your movie collection?
